WOLLUMBIN FORUM 8th October 2006

John Roberts (Wollumbin Dreaming Festival Committee Chairman, Widjabul Tribe Elder) and Kathy Stavrou (PhD research candidate, Southern Cross University) will present a Forum entitled: Caught in the Act" (New South Wales Government Acts of Bastardry against Aboriginal peoples 1788-1861) with the focus being on 19th Aboriginal dispossession, the role of the New South Wales Native Police; the 1861 Robertson free selection Land Act; Aboriginal land rights and Native Title; Ordinances and Statutes referring to Aboriginal people 1835-1861. 

 Kathy Stavrou will give a brief survey of the topic: as a black letter outline of the Colonial directions to New South Wales Governors about Aboriginal subject rights; New South Wales Statutes referring to Aboriginal people 1835 to 1861; Select Committee Reports on the New South Wales Native Police of 1857 and 1858, and Legislative Council debate.

John Roberts will follow with his interpretation and response to the documents, hand to the panel of Elders for questions and commentary, with timekeeper. Some young people may read aloud to the audience, small excerpts from the two Select Committee Reports (1857 and 1858) on the New South Wales Native Police. They make shocking reading and people should hear it.
